Tosa Ken Dogs belong to one of the rare dog breeds. Their characteristic trait is a massive head and a broad chest, which make the dog look quite imposing. Tosa Ken Dogs are also called Tosa Inu, or Japanese Tosa. Well-built and rather massive, Tosa Ken Dogs are agile and calm dogs.

The Tosa Ken's ears are hanging. The dog's muzzle is square. The tail is hanging and thick at the root. The uncut tail tapers to the tip. The Tosa's short coat can be solid colored, black with markings, brindle, or pied.

Generally composed and obedient, the Tosa Ken dog is characterized by boldness, courage and devotion to its family. The breed can be aggressive toward other dogs, if it feels danger. The Tosa Ken is watchful by nature. The dog has an inborn desire to please its owner, which makes it a pleasure to train it.

Tosa Ken Dogs - History

The history of the Tosa Ken is closely connected with the history of dog fighting in Japan. It is believed that the Japanese Tosa was produced as a hybrid of the Shikoku-ken and Western dog breeds. Bulldogs, Mastiffs, Great Danes and German Pointers were used for creating this Japanese breed. The Tosa Ken inherited the fighting instinct known in Mastiffs. Used as a fighting dog in the past, Tosa Ken Dogs are excellent watchdogs and companion dogs nowadays.
